We so often save the most important things to say when our hand is on the door handle. The hugs, the “I love you’s,” and the “Oh, and by the way…” All of it comes out as we’re about to leave. It was the same with Bela Bartok. When he began his Piano Concerto No. 3, he weighed less than 100 pounds, and was literally at death’s door. But he wanted more than anything to leave a present for his wife; so he called up every last bit of strength he had and wrote her this piece. It sums up everything he tried to do as a composer, and everything that mattered most to him when he was about to say goodbye. This moving and powerful music is the centerpiece of Andreas Haefliger's Minnesota Orchestra appearance.
