Week of November 12, 2007
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra
Gil Shaham, violin
Listen (hour 1)
Listen (hour 2)
Listen live from your local public radio station
Program:
Mendelssohn: Sinfonia No. 10 in B minor
Ingram Marshall : Orphic Memories
Beethoven: Violin Concerto in D
Description:
The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra has called NYC its home since it got off the ground in 1972 and they're unlike nearly all other orchestras in that they prefer to work without a conductor. For every piece they perform, members of the orchestra choose the concertmaster and the principal players for each section. For this week’s concert, they chose superstar violinist Gil Shaham to join them for Beethoven's Violin Concerto, a lonstanding dream of Gil's because of the (shall we say) 'lively give-and-take' in an Orpheus rehearsal. Gil is also our guide throughout this entire program, as he’s admired and played with Orpheus for nearly 15 years.
