Program:
JS Bach : Gloria in excelsis Deo
JS Bach: Magnificat in D, BWV 243a
(including four Christmas interpolations)
Description:
When JS Bach wrote his Magnificat in the early 1700s, his world was largely what he could see out his window in Leipzig, Germany. He was brand new in town and his main goal that Christmas was to impress everyone around. For inspiration, Bach chose the old Christmas text of Mary's song of joy at learning she was the Chosen One who'd bear the Christ child. He created spectacularly showy music that let all the Leipzigers know that they had a new talent in their midst. Bach's Magnificat has traveled to places that its creator could never have imagined -- like California. But that is where this masterpiece has landed and comes to life with Bernard Labadie and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
