Week of December 24, 2007
World Orchestra for Peace
Valery Gergiev, conductor
Listen (hour 1)
Listen (hour 2)
Listen live from your local public radio station
Program:
Wagner: Overture to Tannhäuser
Berlioz: Romeo et Juliette Suite
Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet Suite
Description:
It happens about as often as a lunar eclipse, and the results are just as shimmering and beautiful. Here’s an orchestra that has no home, its members come from all over the planet – and every so often these players will drop whatever they’re doing in their own hometowns and gather themselves at a distant spot on the globe. They are the World Orchestra for Peace and in their ranks are dozens of different nationalities, religions, races and creeds. They come to play for peace and – also the chance to play under the baton of Valery Gergiev, one of the most galvanizing figures on any conductor’s podium today.
